How do I choose?

When choosing binoculars, they are generally described according to two important numbers, for example: 8x40. The first number relates to the magnification of the binoculars and the second number to the diameter of the objective (front) lenses in millimetres. Now it would seem sensible to opt for the biggest magnification and the smallest, most compact lenses - that way you could pack the most powerful instrument into your pocket and take them everywhere. But this ignores some basic rules of physics.

What is your objective?

Let's deal with the objective lens first of all. This is the lens at the front of the binoculars, and in most quality makes actually consists of two separate pieces of glass. The aim is to collect as much light as possible without distorting it. Since the glass in the lens usually reflects about 10% of the incident light, special coatings are used to reduce reflections. Multi-coatings are, as they suggest, multiple layers of coating on the lens which can have the effect of reducing reflections to less than 1%. The image is therefore brighter, and ghost images from very bright objects are reduced substanitally. Binoculars with multi-coatings are therefore going to give better performance.

The bigger the objective lens, the more light you will collect. In astronomy, when you are looking at very feint objects at the limit of vision, this is VERY important. Don't expect to see very much at all with a pair of 8x20 compact binoculars. 20mm is not

you need to decide if the binoculars are going to be hand held or tripod mounted. For most hand held binoculars, magnifications over about 10x are difficult to hold steady. And obviously, the higher the magnification, the smaller the field of view

We recommend 7x50 discount binoculars for general purpose astronomy. This 7x magnification coupled with a 50mm objective gives the best combination of light collecting power, field of view and matching to the physical capabilities of the average eye.
