Thuraya Satellite Phone
Thuraya is an advanced geo-synchronous mobile satellite system providing access to Satellite and GSM900 services from the same Handset. It offers the facility for high quality voice, voice mail and SMS as standard, together with an in built GPS. Data/fax facilities are available through the optional data kit with speeds obtainable up to 9600bps which means reliable email or even web browsing.

Handsets
There is a choice of two handsets to operate on the Thuraya system, either the Swiss manufactured Ascom or the American made Hughes. They are essentially the same size and specification and use the identical accessories, including battery. The choice of handset is down to personal preference or possible sensitivities to Country of origin.
The Handsets are a small, lightweight and user friendly design with features familiar with most modern GSM telephones. Unlike other Satellite telephones the antenna is retractable into the body of the telephone offering a smaller package when not in use. Thuraya has the unique facility of High Power Alerting, which means that when the telephone has registered and is then taken inside it can be alerted to an incoming call, subject to signal strength. The user will then have to move outside to accept the call.
A number of accessories are available for use with the handsets in addition to the Data kit; including an In-Vehicle hands free kit and a Fixed Docking Adapter for use in buildings and remote structures, such as Oil Rigs. A solar charger can be used where alternative power sources are not present.

- 3V and 3/5V Plug-in SIM card compatible with the GSM

- Talk time in the Satellite mode is 2.4 hours using the 650 mAh battery and 4.5 hours using the 1200mAh battery
- Standby time in the Satellite mode is 34.1 hours using the 650 mAh battery and 63 hours using the 1200mAh battery

- Li-Ion Battery with capacity 650 & 1200mAh
Airtime
Thuraya airtime can be purchased as Post Paid (30 day account, subject to status) with accompanying activation and monthly subscription fees or using Pre-Pay SIMs and Top-Up scratch cards. A summary of the available options and services apply are detailed below.

- Roaming Facilities for GSM where agreements exist.

- Customer can still receive calls without extending credit
